How Handala operators work

Handala operators typically gain initial access through phishing campaigns, social engineering, or exploitation of critical vulnerabilities in internet-facing services. In some incidents, fake Telegram login pages, malicious QR codes, or session hijacking techniques have been used to achieve account takeover and gain full account access.

Once access is obtained, attackers conduct reconnaissance to collect system information and identify sensitive data. Stolen data may include contact lists, cloud chats, or sensitive information linked to legitimate organisations and individuals.

Data exfiltration often occurs prior to encryption. Ransomware is then deployed across critical systems, sometimes alongside destructive attacks or custom wiper malware referred to in reporting as Handala’s wiper. In certain incidents, malware delivered via NSIS installers, AutoIt scripts, or batch scripts has been used to execute the final payload using specific command line arguments.
