How BlackByte operators work

BlackByte operators typically gain initial access by exploiting exposed services, abusing stolen credentials, or targeting vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange servers and other internet-facing systems. In some incidents, attackers have leveraged remote desktop protocol access or compromised valid authentication tokens.

Once access is gained, attackers perform network discovery and remote system discovery to map victim networks and identify critical systems. Privilege escalation is then used to obtain administrative access, often through credential dumping, registry run keys, or abuse of legitimate tools.

Data exfiltration is carried out before ransomware deployment. Ransomware payloads are then executed via the command line or Windows command shell, encrypting victim files across servers and endpoints. Volume shadow copies and security solutions such as Windows Defender may be disabled or modified to hinder system recovery.

Recognising a BlackByte attack

Indicators of a BlackByte ransomware attack include encrypted files, ransom notes displaying a warning message with payment instructions, and unexpected system reboots.
