First identified in February 2019, the Cl0p ransomware group is a Russian-speaking ransomware as a service (RaaS) operation and remains one of the most formidable cybersecurity threats facing organisations across all sectors. How Cl0p operators work
The Cl0p ransomware group is widely associated with the threat actors known as TA505, and is estimated to have extracted over $500 million in ransoms. Originally relying on phishing attacks and malicious email attachments, Cl0p’s methods have evolved. The group now uses zero day vulnerabilities, such as the MOVEit Transfer vulnerability, to gain access to target organisations’ networks and steal data without immediate detection.
Once inside a system, Cl0p deploys malicious payloads, disables security software, and uses privilege escalation to move laterally through the network. In some cases, it installs a remote access trojan or web shell, allowing continuous remote access for further exploitation. Lateral movement is often combined with data exfiltration, targeting confidential information, network access credentials, and portable executables to maximise leverage.

Recognising a Cl0p attack
Cl0p’s typical ransomware attack strategy involves both encrypting and stealing data. However, the group increasingly uses “encryption-less” extortion, bypassing encryption entirely and focusing solely on exfiltrated data. This approach allows Cl0p to avoid detection by security tools, while still forcing victims to pay to avoid a data leak.
The group’s malicious payloads are often embedded within legitimate files or hidden in network traffic.
